Suggestions for good Murder Mysteries

Submitted by debra.bennett@g... on July 25 at 3:22 pm

I like murder mysteries, if they're intelligent and well written. Anyone suggest any they've read lately? I liked the series that Bones is based on, and even moreso the Tana French books. Has anyone read the Louise Penny book that Hilary Clinton was involved with?

I am not interested in masteries book, since I like biography book you encouraged me to read this book that Hillary Clinton is involved.

I really like to know which issues famous people had, and how they solved them.

Mystery Thrillers

I also love Kathy Reich’s Bones series and Tana French. I haven’t read LP’s book with HC, but I have read many of the Inspector Gamache books-cozy little mysteries!

Have you read Long Bright River by Liz Moore? Or any books by Jane Harper or Clare MacIntosh?

Murder Mystery Book Suggestion

Submitted by SummerReading on July 25 at 11:21 pm

I also love murder mystery books so I found this one that a friend recommended to me but I haven’t read. It is called: The It Girl by Ruth Ware. I also really like Bones so maybe this book will be an equal to that. If you do read this book @Debra please let me know what you think.

Have you seen the movie for that? I sadly haven't had the chance to read or watch the movie but from friends I have heard it is really good but can be a bit intense for some readers

Suggestion: Midnight Sun by Jo Nesbo

Submitted by Jakers67 on August 2 at 12:26 pm

Jo Nesbo writes some Scandinavian-noir mysteries. Midnight Sun is a short title that will give you a taste of his writing style. It's set in northern Norway where a detective tries to unlock the mysteries of a small town. He has much longer, darker entries that can be found in the library's collection.

Thriller/Mystery Book Suggestions

Submitted by usemeinasentence on July 27 at 2:52 pm

I'm a big fan of thrillers, mysteries, and horror novels so here are some of my recommendations:

Karin Slaughter writes very engrossing and dark thrillers. I highly recommend checking out her standalones first (in particular Pretty Girls, The Good Daughter, and False Witness). She has two long-running series as well, so there's plenty to read from her. I will say that her thrillers are quite violent, so be cautious.

Gillian Flynn is a well known thriller author but my favourite book of hers isn't usually mentioned. I loved Dark Places so if you've read anything else by her, definitely check it out! This follows the story of a young woman piecing together what happened the night her family was murdered.

Night Film by Marisha Pessl is a unique thriller that messes with the perception of reality. It follows a journalist searching for answers about the death of the daughter of a renowned and reclusive filmmaker.

Confessions by Kanae Minato is the story of a teacher who believes one of her students murdered her young daughter.

The Lost Village by Camilla Sten is the story of a group of young adults filming a documentary about a remote village where the entire population disappeared overnight. More mystery, less thriller.

Book Awards

Submitted by 12eph on July 28 at 11:59 pm

Does anyone choose books based on the awards they've won?

I always am drawn to a book with those little gold or silver medals on the cover. I have read several books with 'The John Newbery Medal'. One of my favourites is Kira Kira by Cynthia Kadohata. The Pulitzer Prize is on the cover of one of my all time favourite books All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

I also find it very interesting when you read a novel and then later find out it's accolades, although this doesn't happen to me often as I am very behind on my TBR.
